Heartbreak in Glasgow: Nepal Falls Short Against Scotland

In a gut-wrenching clash at Titwood Cricket Ground in Glasgow, Nepal suffered a crushing 34-run defeat to Scotland in the final match of the T20I Tri-Series 2025 on June 20, 2025. Fans across Nepal are reeling from the loss, their hopes of clinching the series title dashed in a high-scoring thriller. Despite a valiant effort, Nepal couldn’t overcome Scotland’s explosive batting and disciplined bowling, leaving supporters heartbroken but proud of their team’s fight.

The match began with Scotland winning the toss and choosing to bat first, a decision that set the stage for a fiery performance. George Munsey, Scotland’s opening batsman, led the charge with a blistering 78 runs off just 39 balls. His innings was a masterclass in aggressive batting, featuring five fours and six towering sixes. Munsey wasted no time, smashing boundaries early and targeting Nepal’s spinners with ruthless precision. In the 10th over, he unleashed a hat-trick of sixes off Dipendra Singh Airee, pushing Scotland past 100 runs in just 10 overs. Alongside him, Brandon McMullen played a steady supporting role, adding crucial runs before falling for 29. Scotland’s momentum continued with contributions from captain Richie Berrington and Michael Leask, who chipped in with quick runs to post a formidable 193/5 in 20 overs. Nepal’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, with Kushal Bhurtel taking a key wicket by dismissing Munsey, but the damage was already done.

Chasing 194, Nepal needed a strong start, but Scotland’s bowlers had other plans. Safyaan Sharif and Chris Greaves struck early, removing key batsmen and putting Nepal on the back foot. Lokesh Bam and Anil Sah fell cheaply, leaving Nepal at 9/2 in just over two overs. Captain Rohit Paudel tried to steady the ship, but his 14-ball seven was cut short by Sharif’s pinpoint bowling. Kushal Bhurtel showed flashes of brilliance with 30 runs off 35 balls, but his dismissal left Nepal reeling at 49/4 after 10 overs. The pressure mounted as wickets fell steadily, with Scotland’s bowlers maintaining tight lines and exploiting Nepal’s struggles against spin.

Despite the mounting odds, Nepal fought back with grit. Rupesh Singh provided a glimmer of hope with a fighting 32, supported by Dipendra Singh Airee’s 14. Their partnership briefly revived Nepal’s chances, but Scotland’s Chris Greaves proved too much, finishing with an impressive 3/27. Nepal’s lower order, including Sandeep Lamichhane, tried to keep the chase alive, but the target proved too steep. Nepal was bowled out for 164 in 19.5 overs, falling 34 runs short. The defeat was a bitter pill for fans who had hoped for a series-clinching victory after Nepal’s earlier wins in the tri-series.

Scotland’s victory was powered by Munsey’s explosive batting and a disciplined bowling effort led by Greaves and Sharif. Michael Leask also played a pivotal role, contributing with both bat and ball. For Nepal, the loss highlighted their reliance on key players like Bhurtel and Lamichhane, who couldn’t replicate their earlier heroics. Bhurtel’s 30 was a brave effort, but it lacked the firepower needed to match Scotland’s aggressive total. Lamichhane, known for his match-winning spells, took wickets but couldn’t stop Scotland’s top order from setting a daunting target.

The T20I Tri-Series, which also included the Netherlands, had been a rollercoaster for Nepal. They started with a thrilling two-wicket win over Scotland on June 17, thanks to Lamichhane’s 4/11 and a tense chase. A six-wicket victory over the Netherlands followed, with Bhurtel’s 65 and Aarif Sheikh’s 39 steering Nepal to a dramatic win. However, a heartbreaking loss to the Netherlands in a historic third Super Over showed Nepal’s fighting spirit but also their inconsistency. The final match against Scotland was a chance to claim the series trophy, but Scotland’s clinical performance proved too strong.

Nepal’s fans took to social media to express their disappointment but also their pride. Posts on X captured the mood, with one user writing, “Nepal loses the match with Scotland by 34 runs.” Another praised the team’s effort, saying, “A valiant quest, but just short.” The Cricket Association of Nepal celebrated Karan KC’s milestone of reaching 100 T20I wickets during the series, a bright spot in an otherwise tough day. Scotland’s official cricket account celebrated their victory, highlighting Munsey’s match-defining knock and their bowlers’ composure.

This loss leaves Nepal at a crossroads in the T20I Tri-Series. Despite their earlier wins, they finished second behind Scotland, which clinched the trophy. Nepal’s campaign showed flashes of brilliance, with players like Bhurtel, Lamichhane, and Paudel stepping up at key moments. However, the team’s inability to maintain consistency against strong opposition remains a challenge. Scotland, powered by Munsey, Leask, and Berrington, demonstrated why they are a formidable side in associate cricket.

As Nepal returns home, the focus will shift to the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, where they face an uphill battle to climb into the top four and secure a spot in the World Cup Qualifiers. With four wins in 14 matches, every game is crucial. The team’s resilience, shown in their close finishes throughout the tri-series, will be key as they prepare for upcoming challenges. For now, Nepal’s players and fans are left to reflect on a series filled with highs and lows, with the pain of this 34-run defeat lingering but not dimming their passion for the game.
