The franchise, known for its fierce spirit and passionate fan base, has officially announced the six players they’re keeping for the 2025 season. Led by the “Magic Man” himself, these stars are set to light up the T20 stage at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Let’s dive into the exciting news about the Gurkhas’ retained squad and what it means for their campaign in NPL Season 2!
The Nepal Premier League has quickly become the heartbeat of cricket in Nepal, bringing together local heroes and international stars in a thrilling T20 format. After a blockbuster first season in 2024, the Kathmandu Gurkhas are ready to build on their foundation and aim for the top spot. The team, owned by Kathmandu Sports Development Venture, made waves last season with their aggressive play and never-say-die attitude. Now, with their core players locked in, they’re poised to make an even bigger impact in 2025.
Leading the charge is none other than Karan KC, the team’s marquee player and captain from Season 1. Known for his fiery pace bowling and leadership, Karan KC is a national team hero who brings experience and flair to the squad. His ability to swing the ball and deliver in clutch moments makes him a cornerstone of the Gurkhas’ game plan. Fans still talk about his fiery spells in the inaugural season, and they’re eager to see him dominate again.
Joining Karan is Shahab Alam, a talented left-arm spinner who can tie down even the most aggressive batters. Shahab’s knack for picking up crucial wickets in the middle overs was a highlight of Season 1. His cool-headed approach and ability to read the game make him a vital part of the Kathmandu Gurkhas bowling attack. With the Kirtipur pitch often favoring spinners, Shahab is ready to spin a web around the opposition.
Bhim Sharki, a reliable batter, is another key retention. Known for his elegant strokeplay, Bhim has been a consistent performer in Nepal’s domestic circuit. While he didn’t always get the big scores in Season 1, his ability to anchor the innings and play smart cricket under pressure earned him a spot. The Gurkhas are banking on Bhim to step up and deliver match-winning knocks in 2025.
Rashid Khan, not to be confused with the Afghan superstar, is a promising Nepali talent who adds depth to the squad. This young all-rounder showed flashes of brilliance last season, contributing with both bat and ball. His versatility gives the Kathmandu Gurkhas flexibility in their lineup, allowing them to adapt to different match situations. Fans are excited to see how Rashid grows in Season 2.
Dipesh Kandel, another retained star, brings youthful energy to the team. As a bowler who can hit the deck hard, Dipesh made an impression in his debut season with his raw pace and fearless attitude. His ability to bowl tight lines in the powerplay and death overs makes him a valuable asset. The Gurkhas see him as a future star, and he’s eager to repay their faith with standout performances.
Rounding out the retained six is Pratik Shrestha, a batter with a knack for playing attacking shots. Pratik’s ability to take on bowlers early in the innings adds firepower to the Kathmandu Gurkhas batting lineup. While he’s still developing his consistency, his potential to turn games around with quick runs is undeniable. The team believes he’s ready to shine in the upcoming season.
The decision to retain these six players shows the Gurkhas’ strategy of blending experience with youth. Karan KC and Shahab Alam bring the know-how, while Bhim Sharki, Rashid Khan, Dipesh Kandel, and Pratik Shrestha add the hunger and energy of young stars. This mix is exactly what the Kathmandu Gurkhas need to compete in a league as tough as the NPL, where every team is stacked with talent.
The NPL’s second season, set to run from November to December 2025, promises to be a spectacle. With eight teams—Biratnagar Kings, Chitwan Rhinos, Janakpur Bolts, Karnali Yaks, Kathmandu Gurkhas, Lumbini Lions, Pokhara Avengers, and Sudurpaschim Royals—battling it out, the competition will be fierce. Each team plays seven matches in a round-robin format, with the top four advancing to the playoffs. The Gurkhas, who finished fourth in Season 1, are determined to climb higher this time.
The team’s home ground in Kirtipur will be a fortress, with fans packing the stands and cheering their heroes. The Kathmandu Gurkhas have a passionate supporter base, and their black-and-yellow colors will be flying high. Social media is already buzzing with excitement, with fans using hashtags like #SBLNPL2 and #GurkhasRoar to rally behind the team. Posts on X show the hype, with one fan writing, “Karan KC and the young guns are ready to dominate! Let’s go, Gurkhas!”
Last season, the Gurkhas showed they could compete with the best, taking on heavyweights like Chitwan Rhinos and Biratnagar Kings. However, they fell short in the playoffs, losing key matches. This time, the team is focused on fixing those mistakes. With their retained core, they’re building a squad that can go the distance. The upcoming player auction will be crucial, as the Gurkhas look to add international stars and more local talent to their roster.
The Kathmandu Gurkhas also benefit from their connection to the capital city. Representing Kathmandu, they carry the pride of the nation’s heart. Their logo, inspired by the fearless Gurkha warriors, reflects their fighting spirit. The team’s management has promised to play bold, exciting cricket that keeps fans on the edge. With players like Karan KC leading the way, they’re ready to live up to that promise.
As the NPL Season 2 approaches, all eyes will be on the Kathmandu Gurkhas. Their retained squad sends a clear message: they’re here to win. With a mix of experienced leaders and young dynamos, the Gurkhas are building a team that can challenge for the title. The stage is set, the players are ready, and the fans are waiting.
