In a heartwarming story from Bhaktapur, a young girl named Goma Shrestha has shown the world that hard work and dreams can overcome any challenge. Goma, who grew up working at a brick kiln with her parents, studied at a local government school and achieved an incredible 4 GPA in the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) for 2081. Her amazing success has caught the attention of many, including Min Bahadur Gurung, the owner of Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket, who has honored her with a laptop, NPR 100,000 in cash, and a promise to support her education all the way to her MBBS studies.
Goma’s journey is not an ordinary one. Born in Khaniyapani, Ramechhap, she moved to Bhaktapur with her family when she was just four years old. Her parents, struggling to make ends meet, worked at a brick kiln in Changunarayan-8, Sudal. Life was tough for Goma. Every morning, she helped her parents carry heavy bricks before heading to Mahendragram Secondary School in the afternoon. “We didn’t have much money,” her father, Meen Bahadur Shrestha, shared. “But Goma loved studying from a very young age.”
Even as a little girl, Goma dreamed big. She wanted to become a doctor and help people. While other children played, Goma balanced her schoolwork with her chores at the brick kiln. In grade nine, she worked hard every day, but when grade ten came, her parents and teachers told her to focus more on her studies. Goma listened. She spent extra hours reading and preparing for the SEE, determined to make her family proud.
When the SEE results came out on Friday, Goma was working in a farmer’s field, planting paddy. Excited and nervous, she checked her results online and saw the magic number: 4 GPA. “I was so happy!” Goma said with a big smile. Her perfect score was proof that her hard work paid off. Her teachers and family cheered for her, and soon, her story spread across Bhaktapur and beyond.
The news of Goma’s success reached Min Bahadur Gurung, the kind-hearted owner of Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket. He was touched by Goma’s determination and wanted to help her achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. He invited Goma and her family to meet him and surprised her with a brand-new laptop to help with her studies. He also gave her NPR 100,000 in cash to support her immediate needs. But that wasn’t all—Mr. Gurung promised to pay for Goma’s education in grades 11 and 12 and support her through her MBBS studies to become a doctor.
“Goma’s story inspires us all,” Mr. Gurung said. “She worked hard despite many difficulties, and I want to make sure she has everything she needs to succeed.” Goma couldn’t believe her ears. “I am so thankful to Mr. Gurung,” she said. “This laptop and money will help me study better, and his support for my MBBS means I can keep chasing my dream.”
Goma’s story also caught the attention of Durlabh Thapa, a Member of Parliament from Bhaktapur Constituency No. 2. He announced a full scholarship for Goma, covering her school fees, uniforms, and books for grades 11 and 12. “Goma is an example of what hard work can do,” Mr. Thapa said. “I want to meet her soon to talk about how we can help her even more.”
Goma’s school, Mahendragram Secondary School, is also proud of her. The teachers there say Goma was always a bright student who never gave up, even when life was hard. “She studied while working at the brick kiln, and still got a 4 GPA,” said one of her teachers. “She is a role model for other students.”
In Bhaktapur, many children like Goma work in brick kilns to help their families. These children often miss school because the kilns are far from schools, and their families can’t afford books or uniforms. Goma’s story shows that with determination and a little help, these children can achieve great things. Organizations like Kopila Nepal are working to help children of brick kiln workers go to school. They run temporary classes so kids can keep learning, even when they move to work with their parents.
Goma’s success is a beacon of hope for other children in Bhaktapur. She plans to join the science faculty in grade 11 and work hard to get into a good medical college for her MBBS. “I want to be a doctor to help people who are sick,” Goma said. “I know it’s a long journey, but I’m ready to work hard.”
The community in Bhaktapur is buzzing with pride for Goma. Her story reminds everyone that no dream is too big, no matter where you come from. With the support of kind people like Min Bahadur Gurung and Durlabh Thapa, Goma is on her way to making her dream of becoming a doctor come true.
For Goma, the laptop and NPR 100,000 are not just gifts—they are tools to build a brighter future. Her 4 GPA in the SEE is just the beginning. With her hard work and the scholarship for her MBBS studies, Goma is ready to soar. Her story is a lesson for all of us: with courage, effort, and a little help, anything is possible.
