Background of the Tinkune Tragedy
On March 28, 2025, a pro-monarchy protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu, escalated into violence, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals: journalist Suresh Rajak and 29-year-old Sabin Maharjan. Rajak, a video journalist for Avenues Television, perished in a building set ablaze during the unrest, while Maharjan, a resident of Kirtipur-4, was fatally shot by police
Mayor Balen Shah's Response
In the aftermath, Mayor Balen Shah visited the grieving families to offer his condolences and support. He emphasized the Kathmandu Metropolitan City's commitment to assisting them in navigating the legal processes necessary to obtain due compensation. Mayor Shah stated, "We are here to ensure that justice is served and that the families receive the support they need during this difficult time."
Government's Compensation Decision
The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to provide financial assistance of Rs1 million each to the families of Rajak and Maharjan. This decision aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by the bereaved families.
Addressing the Tinkune Land Dispute
Beyond the immediate tragedy, the Tinkune area has been entangled in a decades-old land dispute. The government acquired 53 ropanis of land in Tinkune over 50 years ago for a project that never materialized, leaving landowners without compensation. Mayor Shah has been vocal about resolving this issue, criticizing the prolonged inaction and advocating for rightful compensation to the affected landowners. He remarked, "This has been going on for over five decades. Governments come and go, but no one takes action."
Community and Political Reactions
The tragic events in Tinkune have prompted calls from political leaders and the community for thorough investigations and accountability. Former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry to bring those responsible to justice. Similarly, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has advocated for the establishment of a high-level judicial commission to ensure justice for the victims.
Moving Forward
Mayor Balen Shah's engagement with the victims' families and his commitment to addressing long standing issues like the Tinkune land dispute highlight the importance of responsive and compassionate governance. As the city moves forward, it is crucial for all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring justice, providing support to affected families, and resolving underlying issues that contribute to such tragedies.
In conclusion, the Tinkune tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by communities during times of unrest. However, the proactive steps taken by Mayor Balen Shah and the commitments from various governmental bodies offer a path toward healing and justice for the affected families.
