Shocking Corruption Scandal Rocks Kathmandu. The political landscape of Kathmandu was jolted by a major corruption scandal involving none other than Mohan Bahadur Basnet, the sitting Mayor of Nagarjun Municipality. The Special Court of Nepal has officially found him guilty of receiving a massive bribe of ९ करोड २२ लाख रुपैयाँ and laundering १३ करोड २२ लाख रुपैयाँ worth of illegally acquired wealth.
Basnet, who was elected from the Nepali Congress party, had long projected himself as a people-centric leader. However, the recent court ruling has shattered that image, exposing a deeply entrenched web of illegal financial dealings and misuse of political power.
Bribe Worth Crores: The Start of the Fall
At the heart of the case is a substantial bribery charge. The court presented evidence proving that Mayor Basnet accepted ९ करोड २२ लाख रुपैयाँ from a private contractor in exchange for awarding lucrative municipal contracts. The bribe money was allegedly handed over in multiple phases, hidden through layers of paperwork and shell companies.
Investigations revealed how official contracts were unfairly directed toward individuals and companies closely tied to Basnet, bypassing public procurement procedures and ignoring merit-based selection. The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) spent months gathering documentation, tracking bank transactions, and collecting witness testimonies before bringing the case to court.
१३ Crores in Illegal Property Laundering
While the bribery aspect of the scandal was alarming in itself, what shocked the public even more was the money laundering that followed. The court concluded that Mayor Basnet used the ill-gotten funds to purchase assets, including land, apartments, and vehicles, all registered under family members or close associates.
A total of १३ करोड २२ लाख रुपैयाँ in illegal property was laundered through fake business investments and land dealings. These properties were spread across Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur, appearing on paper as legitimate earnings. However, forensic audits and paper trails exposed the fraudulent structure underneath.
The court ruled that this money was converted into seemingly legal assets using sophisticated accounting tricks, forged documents, and third-party intermediaries, an act that falls under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act of Nepal.
Political Shockwave Inside Nepali Congress
Mayor Basnet’s political affiliation with the Nepali Congress party has triggered ripples throughout the organization. Party leaders, already facing criticism over multiple governance issues, were quick to issue a statement distancing the party from Basnet's actions.
However, critics argue that Basnet was a powerful figure within the local party structure and that such large-scale corruption could not have occurred without silent backing or at least ignorance from higher-ups. The public trust in democratic institutions has taken yet another hit.
Some senior Congress members have demanded an internal audit of elected representatives, while others believe the damage is beyond repair unless serious reforms are implemented. Grassroots party workers have expressed shame and frustration, claiming that leaders like Basnet have tarnished the party’s legacy.
Court’s Verdict and Sentence
After months of legal proceedings, the Special Court issued a guilty verdict under multiple sections of the Corruption Control Act and Money Laundering Prevention Act. Basnet now faces several years of imprisonment along with heavy fines that match the total amount of bribery and laundered money.
The judgment sets a significant precedent for future corruption cases involving elected officials. It also sends a clear message that no one is above the law, regardless of their political position or popularity.
The Anti-Corruption Commission and Nepal’s judiciary have been praised for their courage and impartial handling of such a high-profile case. However, watchdogs emphasize the need for faster and more transparent judicial processes to maintain public faith in the system.
Public Reactions
News of the guilty verdict against Mayor Basnet spread rapidly across social media, sparking intense public anger. Residents of Nagarjun Municipality, who had placed their hopes in his leadership, expressed feelings of betrayal. Several civil society groups have already started protests demanding stricter anti-corruption laws and regular financial audits of all municipal leaders.
Young voters in particular took to platforms like Twitter and TikTok to share their views, using hashtags like #CorruptionFreeNepal, #MayorBasnet, and #JusticePrevails. Many questioned the overall ethical integrity of elected officials and called for systemic change.
What This Means for Nagarjun Municipality
The municipality now finds itself in an uncertain situation. With Basnet officially convicted, the post of Mayor is likely to be declared vacant. A temporary administrative team might be appointed by the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration to ensure continuity of services.
Projects under Basnet's administration are being reviewed, with a focus on identifying irregularities and redirecting funds to essential public services. A task force may be formed to audit all contracts issued during his tenure.
Local development in Nagarjun could slow down temporarily, but many residents are hopeful that the next leader will bring transparency and integrity to the office.
