Love, law, and controversy collide! Nepal’s government is stirring debate with plans to legalize polygamy in specific cases, despite its ban since 2018. The Ministry of Law argues this change will protect women who currently lack legal rights in such relationships. The proposed law would apply to both men and women, removing penalties for women marrying already-married individuals.
The new law aims to address real-world challenges. Many women in polygamous relationships face stigma and have no legal protection, like inheritance or financial support. By recognizing these unions, the government hopes to ensure fair treatment. The 2018 ban, enforced on Bhadra 1, 2075, criminalized polygamy, but some argue it left vulnerable women without rights or recourse. The reform seeks to balance tradition and fairness.
Legal experts, however, are sounding alarms. They warn the law could promote patriarchy and widen gender inequality. Critics argue it risks reversing progress made by the 2075 ban, which aimed to empower women and modernize marriage laws. They fear legitimizing polygamy may entrench male dominance in relationships, undermining decades of gender equality efforts.
The debate rages as Nepal weighs tradition against modernity. Supporters see it as a step to protect vulnerable women, while opponents view it as a setback for equality. The Ministry of Law faces pressure to clarify how the law will avoid harm. As discussions unfold, Nepal’s marriage laws hang in the balance, with women’s rights at the heart of the storm.
