Nearly 300 migrants, including nationals from Nepal and other Asian countries, are currently detained in a hotel in Panama City after being deported from the United States under the Trump administration's aggressive immigration policies. The migrants, who are not allowed to leave the Decapolis Hotel, have been displaying signs from their windows pleading for help, stating "Help" and "We are not safe in our country" as they await uncertain repatriation processes.
The group consists of individuals from various countries, including India, Iran, and Afghanistan. Reports indicate that over 40% of these migrants are unwilling to voluntarily return to their home countries. As of now, 171 have agreed to return with assistance from international organizations like the International Organization for Migration and the U.N. Refugee Agency. Discussions are ongoing for the remaining individuals to explore alternative solutions for their repatriation.
Panama has become a "bridge" country for deportees due to challenges faced by the U.S. in directly deporting individuals to certain nations. This arrangement allows the U.S. to offload responsibility while Panama manages the logistics of repatriation24. While Panamanian authorities assert that the migrants are receiving food and medical care, critics have raised concerns about their confinement conditions, which some describe as harsh and reminiscent of detention facilities.
As international agencies work on finding a resolution for these migrants, the situation remains tense. The Panamanian government is under scrutiny as images of detainees displaying desperate pleas circulate in media outlets, highlighting the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
