Sindhupalchok, Nepal – The District Administration Office (DAO) of Sindhupalchok has issued a weather alert, warning residents living near the Bhotekoshi and Sunkoshi Rivers to stay cautious due to the possibility of heavy rainfall until Asar 7 (June 21).
According to the DAO, continuous monsoon rains are expected over the coming days. This could cause the water levels in the Bhotekoshi and Sunkoshi rivers to rise significantly, increasing the risk of floods and landslides in nearby areas.
Residents Urged to Stay Safe
The DAO has urged all residents living in low-lying areas near both rivers to take immediate precautions. People are advised to stay alert, avoid risky zones, and be prepared to move to safer locations if needed.
“There is a high chance of heavy rainfall until Asar 7. We request everyone near the riverbanks to remain alert and follow safety measures,” said an official from the DAO Sindhupalchok.
This warning is especially for people living in coastal, riverbank, and slope areas, where the rainwater could cause rapid flooding or trigger landslides
Why This Alert Matters
Every year, monsoon season brings challenges to Nepal, especially in hilly and mountainous districts like Sindhupalchok. The Bhotekoshi and Sunkoshi Rivers are known to flood quickly during heavy rainfall. In the past, flash floods and river overflows have caused serious damage to homes, roads, bridges, and even led to the loss of lives and livestock.
This time, the DAO is trying to prevent disasters before they happen by informing the public in advance. By staying alert and moving early, people can save themselves and their families.
What You Should Do
Here are some simple safety tips from the District Administration Office to protect yourself:
Stay Informed: Listen to weather updates on the radio, mobile apps, or TV.
Move to Higher Ground: If you live close to the river or a hill, go to a safer place temporarily.
Pack an Emergency Bag: Keep clothes, food, water, a torch, medicines, and documents ready.
Stay in Contact: Inform your neighbors, friends, and relatives about the situation.
Do Not Cross Flooded Areas: Avoid walking or driving through flowing water.
Government and Local Help
The local government has also set up response teams in high-risk areas. They are working closely with security forces, local volunteers, and disaster management units to stay ready in case of any emergency.
Temporary shelters and relief materials such as tents, food, and clean water are also being prepared. The DAO has asked community members to help each other and report any unusual rise in water levels.
Past Experiences Serve as a Warning
Sindhupalchok has witnessed several floods and landslides in the past, including the tragic Jure landslide in 2071 and the Melamchi flood in 2078, which caused massive destruction. The memory of these disasters reminds everyone that being prepared is better than being sorry.
Because of this, the DAO is not taking any chances. The warning is not meant to cause fear, but to ensure that people are ready and safe.
People Already Taking Action
Many local residents have already started moving important items to safer places. Farmers are covering their crops, and schools in some high-risk zones are making plans to shift classes online or temporarily close.
A local teacher in Bahrabise said,
“We are informing our students and their families about the alert. Everyone is worried, but they also understand the need to be careful.”
Stay Calm, Stay Ready
Although this is a serious alert, officials say there’s no need to panic. With the right precautions, people can stay safe from the rain and possible flooding.
The DAO has promised to continue sharing updates regularly and is ready to help anyone in need. Everyone is encouraged to work together as a community and to prioritize safety over convenience during this monsoon season.
