In a chilling tale from 2008, Gaurishankar Ram Chamar, a 43-year-old from Sitamarhi, Bihar, has arrived in Kathmandu to demand justice. He survived the horrific Rautahat bomb blast on 27 Chaitra 2064 (April 9, 2008), in Rajpur Farhadwa, where explosives detonated during Nepal’s first Constituent Assembly elections. Allegedly, injured victims were burned alive in a brick kiln to hide evidence. Gaurishankar, an Indian national, claims he witnessed the gruesome cover-up orchestrated by then-Nepali Congress leader Aftab Alam.
High Court’s Shocking Acquittal
In May 2025, the Birgunj High Court acquitted Aftab Alam and three others, citing insufficient evidence, overturning the Rautahat District Court’s life imprisonment verdict from April 2024. Gaurishankar, haunted by memories of the blast and the kiln, says the ruling crushed victims’ hopes. He alleges Alam’s men coerced him to change his testimony, even abducting him in 2019. Now in Kathmandu, he seeks to challenge the acquittal at the Supreme Court, hoping to expose the truth behind the massacre.
A Survivor’s Fight for Truth
Gaurishankar’s journey to Kathmandu is a bold step. He held a press conference, recounting the explosion that killed and injured many, including Trilok Pratap Singh and Osi Akhtar, allegedly burned alive. Despite threats, he vows to fight for justice. His story highlights Nepal’s struggle with impunity and political interference in the judiciary. As he appeals to the Supreme Court, Gaurishankar’s courage inspires victims’ families, demanding accountability for the 2008 tragedy.
