Clashes erupt; skies roar! Thailand and Cambodia are locked in a fierce border dispute that’s spiraled into airstrikes and chaos. On July 24, 2025, Thailand launched F-16 jets to bomb Cambodian military targets near the Ta Moan Thom Temple, a sacred Hindu site dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Emerald Triangle, a contested area where Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos meet. Both nations blame each other for starting the violence, which has claimed lives, including civilians, in this long-standing feud rooted in colonial-era maps.
The situation is dire. Thailand has closed all border crossings, halting trade and travel, while evacuating over 40,000 civilians from danger zones in provinces like Surin and Sisaket. Hospitals and homes have been hit by Cambodian artillery, killing at least 11 civilians, including an 8-year-old boy, and injuring many. Cambodia accuses Thailand of unprovoked attacks, while Thailand claims Cambodian forces fired first with rockets and laid landmines that maimed Thai soldiers.
This conflict traces back to a 1907 French colonial map that Cambodia uses to claim land, but Thailand disputes its accuracy. The Ta Moan Thom Temple and Preah Vihear Temple have sparked violent clashes before, with the International Court of Justice ruling in Cambodia’s favor in 1962 and 2013. Yet, Thailand rejects the court’s authority, pushing for bilateral talks.
Nationalist fervor fuels the fire on both sides. Thailand’s acting leader insists fighting must stop before negotiations, while Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet demands a UN response. With diplomatic ties downgraded—ambassadors recalled and expelled—the region braces for more tension as ASEAN and global powers urge peace.
