Heartbreaking news from Russia’s Far East: a passenger plane carrying 50 people has crashed near the Chinese border. The An-24 aircraft, operated by Siberia-based Angara Airlines, was traveling from Blagoveshchensk to Tynda when it vanished from radar on Thursday. The wreckage was found burning on a mountainside about 16 kilometers from Tynda, a remote town in the Amur region. Authorities report no survivors, with 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members feared dead.
The plane, a Soviet-era An-24 built in 1976, lost contact with air traffic controllers during a second landing attempt at Tynda airport. Poor visibility and bad weather are suspected to have played a role, with preliminary investigations pointing to possible pilot error. A rescue helicopter spotted the burning fuselage, and emergency teams are navigating the rugged, forested terrain to reach the site. The crash site, surrounded by dense woods, poses challenges for recovery efforts.
Russian officials have launched a criminal investigation to determine the cause. Regional governor Vasily Orlov confirmed the tragedy, noting that all necessary resources were deployed for the search. The An-24, known for its ability to handle tough conditions, has faced issues due to Russia’s aging fleet and Western sanctions limiting aircraft maintenance. This crash raises concerns about aviation safety in remote regions.
The incident has drawn global attention, with Chinese President Xi Jinping sending condolences to Vladimir Putin. As rescue teams work to recover remains, the focus is on supporting the victims’ families and uncovering why this tragedy occurred.
