The recent incident at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, has sent shockwaves across India and Nepal. The tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old Nepali student, has sparked widespread outrage, student protests, and diplomatic concerns. What initially seemed like a case of suicide soon unraveled into a disturbing narrative of harassment, institutional failure, and a troubling response from university authorities.
This case goes beyond just one university—it raises serious questions about student safety, the treatment of international students, and how institutions handle crises.
The Incident: What Happened?
On February 16, 2025, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student at KIIT, was found dead in her hostel room. According to Hindustan Times, initial investigations suggested that she had taken her own life after facing months of harassment and blackmail by a fellow student, Advik Srivastava .
Following her death, police arrested Srivastava on charges of abetment to suicide. Authorities have also seized electronic devices to examine messages, calls, and other potential evidence of blackmail. The Economic Times reported that police believe Srivastava played a significant role in emotionally distressing Prakriti, leading to her tragic decision.
Outrage and Protests by Nepali Students
The tragedy ignited immediate protests within KIIT, with over 500 Nepali students demanding justice for Prakriti. Their demands were simple but powerful:
- Strict legal action against the accused
- Transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to her death
- Protection and assurance of safety for Nepali students at KIIT
However, instead of addressing these concerns, the university administration took a drastic step that shocked many—it issued a notice ordering all Nepali students to vacate the campus immediately.
The Kathmandu Post reported that the move was seen as an attempt to silence dissent rather than ensuring justice. Students, already grieving, were further traumatized by what appeared to be an act of institutional betrayal.
The eviction order led to an international diplomatic intervention, with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli raising concerns with Indian authorities. Following this, KIIT revoked its decision, allowing Nepali students to return. While this reversal was welcomed, the damage had already been done.
Institutional Failure and Lack of Support
One of the most disturbing aspects of this case is how the institution failed Prakriti Lamsal.
Universities should be places where students feel safe and supported. Had there been a proper grievance redressal system, Prakriti could have reported the harassment and received the help she needed. Unfortunately, as seen in many cases, victims often suffer in silence due to lack of institutional support.
Even after her death, the university's knee-jerk reaction to evict Nepali students instead of providing emotional and legal assistance raises serious concerns. How many more students have to suffer before universities take harassment and mental health seriously?
The Bigger Picture: What This Means for Student Safety
This case is not just about one university—it’s about the safety of international students across the world. It highlights:
- The Need for Stronger Anti-Harassment Policies
- Universities must establish zero-tolerance policies for harassment and blackmail.
- There should be anonymous complaint mechanisms where students can report issues without fear of retaliation.
- Mental Health and Student Support Systems
- Universities need to invest in mental health counseling services and make them easily accessible.
- Crisis intervention teams should be trained to handle sensitive situations like bullying and harassment.
- Better Handling of International Student Affairs
- Institutions must remember that international students are far from home, often without strong local support networks.
- In times of crisis, they should be protected, not expelled.
Current Status and Ongoing Investigation
As of now, the Odisha police continue to investigate Srivastava’s role in Prakriti’s harassment. He remains in custody, and legal proceedings are ongoing.
The KIIT administration has also set up a 24/7 control room to address concerns raised by Nepali students, though many feel this is too little, too late.
While some steps have been taken, justice will only be served when:
✅ The accused is held accountable
✅ Institutional reforms prevent similar cases in the future
✅ Universities prioritize student safety over reputation management
Justice for Prakriti Lamsal
The tragic loss of Prakriti Lamsal is a wake-up call for universities, students, and policymakers. Her death should not be in vain. Instead, it should lead to lasting changes in student protection, harassment policies, and international student rights.
As we demand #JusticeForPrakriti, let this case serve as a turning point—one where institutions finally recognize their responsibility in ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of every student.
